RICHMOND, Va - Jessica Haddad, Managing Editor of R Home Magazine, visited the studio to talk about her recent trip around Richmond with catalog kit home expert Rosemary Thornton. Between 1908 and 1940, Sears Roebuck and Co. sold about 70,000 houses from its mail-order catalogs, providing an inexpensive way to Americans to build “modern homes.” A fraction of these kit homes survive, and some are right here in Richmond. Jessica gives some clues to look for if you suspect you live in a catalog kit home. Learn more about mail-order catalog kit homes from expert Rosemary Thornton on September 25th at the Virginia Center for Architecture, located at 2501 Monument Avenue. The event runs from 6:30pm to 8pm and tickets are $5. For more information visit www.richmag.com/rhome and www.facebook.com/RHomeMagazine.
