Burglary, sexual assault near VCU campus during move-in weekend

RICHMOND, Va. -- It's not the news parents or students want to hear:  crimes taking place over the weekend near VCU campus, as thousands of students were moving-in for the upcoming academic year.

Richmond Police said they received a report of a sexual assault near the campus on Sunday. The crime allegedly occurred at a private house off campus in the 1200 block of West Marshall Street. Police said the victim knew the suspect.

Police also said a burglary happened on Sunday.

It happened in the 1000 block of West Marshall Street. The victim heard noises in his apartment and found a male suspect in the living room, going through his things. The suspect then ran away.

As a result of the burglary, police increased patrols in the area.

CBS 6 did report Saturday that VCU Police have seen a 40% reduction in campus crime.
