RICHMOND, Va.  -- Recently crunched numbers by Nerdwallet.com show that the average cost for Virginia  drivers caught speeding is just over a total average of $335 a ticket.

But Richmond is the most expensive area in the Commonwealth to get fined, with drivers paying over $386.

Like many of us, Alex South admits she's gone a little too fast while driving at times.

"A little bit more than I should have, absolutely," said South.

Because of this, South said she recently found herself with a pricy speeding ticket she got while in Henrico

"I was like no way, I'm really upset about this but I pulled over and took the ticket anyway," she said.

Alex paid the fines, but speeding cost her more than just a ticket. She had to pay court fees and had to deal with her insurance possible going up.

The average speeding ticket in Virginia will cost around $141 for going 15 miles per hour over the speed limit. Tack on the insurance costs and it can add up to around $64 per year for three years.

"It's not worth paying the high price that comes along with it," said South.

"It becomes an expensive thing," said one Richmond driver.

Martha Meade with AAA Mid-Atlantic agrees the cost can make your wallet much lighter, but said drivers need to also remember the dangers of speeding.

"About 1,000 people every month die in this nation due to speeding," she said.

"It makes me definitely want to stick to the 25 that is mostly around the city and not go about 30," said South.
