RICHMOND, Va. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 8 p.m. for central and western Virginia, including the Richmond metro area.
As a cold front slowly approaches us from the northwest, scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible this afternoon and evening. The most intense storms will be capable of producing large hail and damaging straight-line winds.
Locally heavy rainfall will occur with the storms, possibly producing over 1″ of rain in a short period of time. All areas will be very hot and humid with highs in the mid to upper 90s, and heat index values at or above 100°.
Counties covered by the watch include: Albemarle, Amelia, Amherst, Appomattox, Augusta, Buckingham, Caroline, Charlotte, Chesterfield, Culpeper, Cumberland, Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Hanover, Henrico, King George, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, Page, Powhatan, Prince Edward, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Spotsylvania & Stafford
