RICHMOND (WTVR) – CBS 6 Sports has learned that former Virginia Tech forward Marshall Wood is transferring to play for Chris Mooney and the Richmond Spiders.

Last month Wood asked for, and received, a release from the Hokies for whom he saw diminished playing time this past season as a sophomore. He averaged 4.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while playing in 26 games, making 11 starts.

“We are very excited to welcome Marshall to the Richmond Basketball program,” Mooney said of Wood. “Marshall is talented and versatile.  We look forward to him working hard for this coming year in preparation for his final two seasons of college basketball.”

The 6’8″ native of Rustburg had more production as a freshman, posting a double-double against N.C. State. Last month, he told the Roanoke Times he was leaving the VT program to better focus on academics and that the decision has nothing to do with the Hokies changing coaches.

“This was a decision that was going to happen regardless if [former Tech coach James] Johnson was going to be there or not. I think [new head coach Buzz] Williams is going to do a very, very good job with the team. I talked to him, and I’m very impressed” Wood said.

Under NCAA rules, he will have to sit out the upcoming season but will be eligible for the 2015-16 season and have two years of eligibility remaining.

He was a four-year letterwinner at Rustburg, named first-team All-State as a senior while averaging 24.1 points and 12 rebounds per game.
