Las Vegas, NV (KVVU) – Las Vegas Metro police believe the deaths of two infants may have been the result of separate co-sleeping incidents.
According to Officer Laura Meltzer of Metro, investigators were looking into the deaths that happened May 8 and May 9.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office identified the child who died May 8 as 2-month-old Emilia Lothringer, while the baby who died May 9 was identified as 1-month-old Kion McCullin.
The cause of death for each child remained pending Friday.
According to police, both incidents appeared to show unsafe sleeping environments, though, investigators did not see anything criminal involved.
Toxicology results were also pending in the cases.
Police noted six babies have died this year due to unsafe sleep in Metro’s jurisdiction. Police also said between 20 and 24 infants on average die each year due to unsafe sleep.
Last year, Metro police produced a public service announcement aimed at helping parents keep their babies safe while sleeping.
They highlighted the ABC’s of safe sleeping:
A: Babies should always sleep alone. They shouldn’t be co-sleeping with parents, siblings, even a twin or a pet.
B: Babies should sleep on their backs.
C: Babies should always sleep in a crib.
