RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) — A cold front is approaching the area, and with hot and humid air ahead of it, enough instability exists for scattered thunderstorms through this evening.  Not all areas will see storms, but there is a higher likelihood of the storms occurring across about the northeastern third of the state.  This includes the Richmond metro area, and points north and east.

Any storm that does develop will produce lightning and heavy rainfall, along with the chance of some small hail and wind gusts over 30 mph.  However, isolated storms have the potential to become severe with large hail (1″ in diameter or larger) and damaging winds (winds 58+ mph).  With the higher humidity in place, localized rainfall of over 1″ in a short period of time will be possible.

The front will pass this evening, ending the severe threat, and allowing cooler and less humid air to return to the area.
