RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- It’s been a while since there’s been a really nice, mid-sized music venue in Richmond where local and national acts on the move can play on a high-tech sound stage that sounds great to them as well as to  the crowd.

The Broadberry (at Broad and Mulberry Streets, 2729 W. Broad Street) fills the gap between the bigger, super-nice National and the multitude of bar/restaurants that with smallish stages, like Poe’s Pub, the Camel, Wonderland and many others.

It’s also fits in an awakening Mid-town, a big hunk of the city that never got much respect outside of Pleasants Hardware, the Sauer’s sign and the Science Museum. Now there’s the Redskin’s Park, new restaurants, Emilio’s, the Camel, a planned Whole Foods and this mid-sized rock hall.

In my view, Richmond has this great music scene and a really bad case of low self-esteem when it comes to how it sees itself. Music lovers around the world have heard of our scene, thanks to GWAR, Lamb of God and a host of other bands and musicians. But mostly, we here don’t really appreciate it.

So there’s been a nice buzz about this new place to showcase our talent.

It’s been open for a month now, so I stopped in Tuesday night to have a look. Local faves DJ Williams and his crew were on that new stage.

Check it out.
