RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A person was airlifted from the middle of the James River Wednesday morning in Richmond. CBS 6 photojournalist Chris Munnings captured the rescue on video from the Powhite Parkway.

The person who was rescued had jumped into the river off of the Powhite Parkway bridge, according to witnesses. After floating down the river 100 - 150 feet, the person ended up on a rock.

Richmond river rescue and two state police helicopters arrived helped in the rescue. Officials said the victim's injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

The right and right center lanes of Powhite Parkway/Route 76 east in Chesterfield were closed near the Richmond line as police responded to this incident.

I was driving over the Powhite bridge around 11:00 am today, and spotted a car pulled over. This is strange, I thought, this part of the road (over the bridge) is clearly marked with “no parking, stopping, standing, etc.” signs. The driver of the car then gets out of the car and proceeds to go to the bridge railing, climbs over the rail and jump from the bridge. All in one swift motion, no hesitation at all. I was stunned at what I saw, but had the sense to call this into 911 and report the incident. The 911 operator told me to they would alert the fire department. I continued on my way to VCU where I work. Seeing this story and the rescue of this person is very heartwarming, and I prey that the young man who jumped will recover and find his way in this precious thing called…

thank you for the info. Sad but where there is a will there is a way. but this river is so uneven you are more likely to become paralyzed than dead. some thing to consider.
