GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (KTVT/WTVR) - A fatal fire that claimed the life of a mother and child earlier this year has inspired one little boy to take action. When eight-year-old Hector Montoya saw news of the deadly fire on television, he could not understand how the woman and her six-year-old daughter could not get out of the burning house in time. He also could not understand how the home could not have a working smoke detector.

Hector decided he needed to do something.

"I was saving $300 for a PS4, but I thought saving a life was a little more important," Hector said. "It really hurts my heart to see people die in a fire It really does."

Hector took the money he saved and bought smoke detectors for homes that needed one. With the help of the Grand Prairie Texas Fire Department, he has installed nearly 100 smoke detectors.

"Hector is passionate about things and when he gets something in his mind - he does it," his mother Monty Montoya said.

A GoFundMe site created to buy more smoke detectors has raised more than $7,000.
