RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The sluggish, sprawling severe weather storm system expands its reach over us in Virginia today, bringing rounds of heavy rain, and the potential for severe weather.

Widespread rain totals of one to three inches look likely, with higher totals possible, through Thursday morning. With that anticipated heavy rainfall, a Flash Flood Watch is in effect:

As a warm front slowly lifts northward toward Virginia this afternoon, the ingredients fueling severe weather will move into our region. For that reason, we have the slight risk for severe thunderstorms Tuesday (afternoon and evening):

A warm front currently drifting north in southern North Carolina will reach southern Virginia late this afternoon. That will bring the greatest potential for severe weather to south-central Virginia.  Shear, moisture, and lift will all be sufficient for large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes from mid-afternoon through evening.  The key, though, for our severe threat will be to see how far north the warm front will lift through Virginia. I think it’s going to struggle to make much progress northward until after dark. The threat for severe weather will exist in the vicinity of the front, though, so all areas south of the front will be in what is called the “warm sector.”

The warm sector will overspread our entire area on Wednesday as the warm front lifts north of Virginia, setting the stage for widespread severe storms.  Shear will again be more than sufficient for tornadoes.  We will have the CBS 6 Storm Chase Team out tracking these storms Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing you live updates and streaming video as they develop.

The instability with this storm system will shift northeast of the area on Thursday, with just a few remaining showers possible as the surface cold front passes mid-day Thursday.

The James River will likely rise above minor flood stage by Thursday. You can check the latest river forecast HERE.
