RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- Richmond City Councilman Parker Agelasto is calling for speeders to be fined an extra $200 per speeding ticket on West Cary, between Addison and Main Streets, as well as Semmes Avenue between 22nd and Dundee Streets.

A recent study that's part of the proposal to increase fines for speeders, says that many drivers are usually driving 10 miles over the posted speed limit.

Richmonders who live on stretches of West Cary Street and Semmes Avenue say they are consistently seeing drivers speed through their neighborhoods and are increasingly becoming more concerned for the safety of pedestrians.

Alice Mahoney lives in the area and said she has noticed the problem.

"You get caught up because there's no stop lights around this area, so it's easier to pick up speed," said Mahoney. "As a pedestrian you realize, right around here, how fast people are really going."

Jenna Snead is the owner of Fresca, a restaurant on West Cary. Snead says she approves, saying that her customers would feel safer coming to her restaurant if drivers were following the posted speed limit.

If the resolutions are passed by City Council, new signs will be posted on the streets warning drivers about the increased speed.
