RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A fire near Mayo Island created a cloud of black smoke near the 14th Street Bridge that could be seen all around Richmond. Police said it appeared a grill in a homeless camp near the bridge was the source of the smoke.

“I’ve consulted with one of our engineers. He informed me that he and one of our bridge inspectors conducted an investigation and have determined that there is no structural damage to the bridge as a result of the fire,” Richmond Department of Public Works Public Information Manager Sharon North.

Police closed the 14th Street Bridge as a precaution.

Update from Rob Cardwell: There is a homeless encampment under south side of the bridge. Richmond Police on scene speculate the fire started there.

It looked bigger than it actually was when it started. The fire is all out now.
