An Attleboro, Mass., family found quite the surprise in their yard Sunday morning. A deer trying to jump over their white picket fence was trapped.

The family, at first, thought they were branches. “We looked outside and we thought it was a huge branch,” 7-year-old Grant Kelley said. “And I looked at it and saw fur on it and I'm like, ‘uh, okay this is weird.’”

It seemed as though the deer was trying to jump the picket fence behind the Kelley family’s home. The mother, Kate Kelley, was in shock when she came out to take a look.

“I peered over the other side of the fence and it revealed the whole rest of the body of the deer and it was kind of looking at me like ‘help what do I do,’” Kate said. “So I immediately called for my husband.”

At first the Kelleys’ thought the deer was injured. When Brian Kelley came out, he realized the deer’s legs weren’t broken, but just stuck.

So, lifting up the pickets of the fence and pushing against the deer, he freed it from its unlucky predicament.

“The pickets just pop right up. So I was able to free it by creating enough space that I could get one leg free and then I used my shoulder to push the other leg through,” Brian said. “All I cared about was protecting my face and not ending up with a broken nose.”

Both the deer, and family, are now safe.
