RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) - A group of New York City firefighters are riding bikes from Ground Zero in New York to the Navy SEALS Memorial in Florida to make a special delivery.

The FDNY Trident Ride is in honor of the sacrifice the SEALS have made since the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.  The firefighters are delivering a steel beam, which was once a part of the 59th or 60th floor of one of the towers, to the museum.  It's a more than 1,100 mile journey.

"This really hammers home the message we are trying to give; that these guys do a lot for us, and they sacrifice a lot for us," said Kevin McCormick, who helped organize the ride.

The riders spent Saturday night in Richmond, and left for Virginia Beach early Sunday morning.  The pack of bikes led the way with a rented RV towing the beam along behind them.

The FDNY Trident Ride has already made hundreds of people who happen upon the group reflect about the day of the attacks more than 12 years ago.

"When you're guys are going into a building, they don't know what to expect," said Sal Torcivia, who responded to ground zero the day of the attacks.

The Trident Ride expects to reach Ft. Pierce, FL, on April 4th.  The next day they will present the beam to active duty SEALS.
