VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY/CNN) --Kids are taught that honesty is the best policy, but at one Virginia Beach middle school a sixth grader may beg to differ.

Last Thursday at Bayside Middle School, sixth grader Adrionna Harris came to the aide of a classmate who was cutting his arm. She faces expulsion for taking a razor from the student, throwing it away and convincing him what he was doing wasn't right.

She thought she was doing the right thing, so on Friday she told the school administration what happened. The way school officials responded led to this question: was the schools zero tolerance policy taken too far

Instead of getting praise from the school administration, Adrionna got a 10 day suspension with recommendation for expulsion. The interesting thing is that the only reason Adrionna got suspended was because she admitted what happened. The alleged weapon was thrown away, and it was her word alone that led to her suspension.

I was shocked and surprised. I was very shocked that a student would get suspended for saving another child," said Rachael Harris, Adrionna's mother.  "The school system over-reached absolutely."

The school's own details of the event state Adrionna reported the student had a razor blade. She admitted taking it from the student then throwing the blade away.

I took the razor blade, and then I threw it away immediately,” she said. “I didn’t carry it around the school, I didn’t use it against anyone. I threw it away,” she told 10 On Your Side.

“I felt she did the right thing, her mother said. Under the circumstances, she thought he would bleed out, as he was cutting himself, and there was no teacher in sight. It was a 911 situation, and there wasn’t time to find a teacher.”

We asked Adrionna, if she would do the same thing again, knowing she would get suspended for holding the blade.

“Even if I got in trouble, it didn’t matter because I was helping him. I would do it again even if I got suspended, yes,” she said.

Most frustrating to the Harris family is they feel like they were ignored. None of their calls were returned about the incident until a news station became involved. made calls and went to the school. They called school board members, who didn’t want to comment, but calls finally came in to the Harris family.

“It is amazing. They are listening to us --now she should be back in school tomorrow and that would be fair,” said Rachael Harris.

Wednesday night, Virginia Beach City Public Schools agreed to do something that makes the Harris family really happy. They’ve moved Adrionna’s suspension hearing, which was supposed to be in ten days, to Thursday.

The Harris family hopes after the hearing, where everything is explained again, that Adrionna will be allowed back to class on Friday or at the latest Monday.

On Thursday the board voted not to expel Adrionna, but it appears the suspension will hold. Read more on:

Should not have been suspended. By the way, you need a new proofreader. Came to the “aid,” not “aide.” You people are supposed to be professionals.

Typical result of a liberal progressive run school system where accountability, personal responsibility, and common sense have been replaced by zero tolerance rules. I use the term liberal progressive due to the propensity for them to make rules that do away with anything resembling a situation where one has to actually look into all the shades of gray. What is particularly telling is that the girl 1) took personal responsibility by taking the razor away from a student that was harming himself (thereby taking away a personal right of this kid to cut himself), 2) Admitted to the deed to the administration (taking personal responsibility for her own actions with is anathema to a die hard liberal progressive), and she was honest (which is something that a die hard liberal progressive has issues with). It’s stories like this that make me happy that my child is out of public schools and make me feel sorry for those students and good teachers who are subject to the idiocy of school administrators like this.

Well put Athynz. How dare a youngster violate the indoctrination that demands people be a victim/sheep.

Odd how you presume to understand the concept of “liberal progressive”, or anything else for that matter. It is tragic that you bred your moronic gene line. God save the gene pool from contributions by you and roger.

      • athynz

Odd that you are able to actually put together semi-coherent sentences considering you are intellectually unable to comprehend the subjects that are actually being discussed David. CAN you actually comment on the topic or is it easier for you to do the typical liberal progressive thing and insult people with whom you disagree? Personally I believe that it is the latter and you seriously have no idea what is being discussed and you simply insult me and others here to salve your ego – an ego that has gone through the “everybody wins!” liberal progressive mantra.

So tell me David – should the girl have been suspended for taking the razor away from her classmate that was cutting himself? A simple yes or no is sufficient – provided you understand what either word means.

I agree with Athynz except that I would replace “liberal progressive” with “conservative moralistic. ” Zero tolerance policies were a conservative response to supposed liberal excesses and assumed widespread chao in classrooms

    • manalishi

Well put John Richmond. Would you agree that zero tolerance is not applied to the components of classroom chaos for PC purposes?

The entire school administration associated with this needs to be fired and placed in a different career line.
