COLONIAL HEIGHTS – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews continue to work in 12 hour shifts overnight to treat icy patches around the Richmond District due to late snow showers and pavement moisture refreezing.

Crews are treating roads with sand and salt to improve drivers’ traction on the roads and to help melt ice.

Most roads around the Richmond District are in minor condition, meaning that ice patches are possible. Drivers are encouraged to delay travel overnight and early tomorrow until temperatures rise.

The morning commute could be slick; particularly on bridges, overpasses, shaded and low-lying areas.

VDOT offers the following tips for driving in icy conditions:

  • Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.
  • Keep a safe distance of at least five seconds behind other vehicles and moving equipment.
  • If you begin to skid, do not brake. Take your foot off the gas and steer the vehicle in the direction you want to go.

Before travel, drivers should check weather and road conditions by visiting 511virginia.org, calling 511 from any phone in Virginia or using the free 511Virginia app for Smartphone devices.

Individual road conditions can be accessed by visiting http://www.511virginia.org/mobile/?menu_id=conditions.
