NEW KENT, Va. (WTVR)--About 100 family and friends gathered on the soccer field at New Kent High, for a vigil honoring a father and son.

Warren Lewis was driving down Route 5 with his son Jayme Street, around 3:15 a.m. Sunday.  According to state police, crews responded after the 2004 Ford F-150 ran off the right side of the road.

The driver over-corrected, ran off the left side of the road and then hit a tree.

Investigators said that impact with the tree caused the vehicle to burst into flames. Both died at the scene.

Tuesday night Pastor Milton Hathaway gave the prayer and benediction at the vigil. The pastor has an unusual spiritual connection with Warren Lewis.

On August 14, 1992, Pastor Hathaway’s 14-year-old son was returning from a camping trip.

The trip had been rained out. He was riding in the back of a truck that went off the lip of the road and overturned, killing the pastor’s son Randy --but not before another teen at the time riding in the back tried saving him.

That teen was Warren Lewis, the father killed in Sunday morning’s fiery crash.

Lewis was 39-years-old. His son Jayme was 19-year-old, and had graduated from New Kent in 2012.

Family and friends confirmed the names, but state police have not yet officially released the identities.
