Ross Carter, 42, of Spotsylvania is charged with felony abduction and malicious wounding.

Around 10 a.m., Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of domestic violence in the 11900 block of Belafonte Road. According to a communications officer, the 9-1-1 call that came in stated that the victim was first assaulted and then was heard being forced into Carter’s vehicle.

When officers arrived to the scene, Carter and the victim were gone. Deputies began searching and warned surrounding jurisdictions to be on the look out for Carter’s vehicle, which was described as a dark grey Dodge Challenger with Maryland tags.

Around 12 p.m., Virginia State Police spotted a car matching Carter’s vehicle description around Lewistown Road. When troopers attempted to stop the car, Carter attempted to evade police. A brief pursuit followed until Carter abandoned the vehicle and fled into the nearby woods.

A K-9 unit eventually tracked Carter down, although he took off again and was caught a short time later.

Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Carter and charged him with felony abduction and malicious wounding. He was then taken to Rappahannock Regional Jail.

The victim was sent to Rappahannock Regional Medical Center. She was released and listed in good condition after being treated for injuries sustained during the incident.
