RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -- The looming winter storm has created a bit of traveling trouble for some across the nation, including here in Central Virginia.

“This has been a very difficult winter,” Troy Bell with the Richmond International Airport said.

Amtrak suspended some rail service Wednesday, to include trains scheduled to travel through Northern Virginia. And for those with plans to take to the skies, there are similar situations.

“Trying to estimate whether a flight is actually going to happen, is kind of like throwing darts with a blindfold on,” Bell said.

There are already thousands of cancelled flights, with dozens affecting those looking to fly out of the Richmond International Airport.

“Everything between Richmond and Atlanta has cancelled,” Bell said. “Twenty-four of the 36 cancellations are just between those two cities. So tomorrow (Thursday) it looks like Atlanta starts to come back on line and Charlotte does better, but the focus moves to the North.”

And for traveling by way of automobile, they have experienced clear conditions. VDOT started pre-treating the interstates, primary roads and heavily traveled secondary roads early Tuesday morning. However there are even more concerns surrounding this storm, as tree limbs could make for a more treacherous commute.

“With a storm of this size we want to try and get out in front of it as much as possible,” Lindsay LeGrande with VDOT said. “With this storm we may see some heavier snow and that could cause some branches to get a little bit more snow than they are used to seeing especially this time of year.”

Representatives with Greyhound also told CBS 6 News--if the storm hits Central Virginia as predicted--the Richmond bus terminal will close at midnight on Thursday and is not said to reopen until 10:00 a.m. Thursday.
