SANDSTON, Va. (WTVR) – Seven Pines Elementary in eastern Henrico was put on lock down for 35 minutes Wednesday morning after gunshots were reported in the area.

“Henrico Police responded quickly and determined that the sounds actually were related to flares being set up at the adjacent airport,” a message sent to parents of Seven Pines students read. “A lock down is a precautionary procedure where students remain in classrooms and instruction continues as normal.”

Airport spokesman Troy Bell said the flares are used to scare away birds that sometimes get in the way of incoming and outgoing airplanes.

The lock down was lifted at 10:35 a.m.
