CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) -- Three separate random gunfire incidents were reported this weekend in Chesterfield County.
One of the incidents occurred about a mile away from where 7-year-old Brendon Mackey was killed by random gunfire last July Fourth.
Several children were outside playing basketball in the Magnolia Green subdivision when they said they heard and felt a stray bullet zoom by.
"We were playing basketball and a bullet came past us," Peter Zuppa, a high school student, said Sunday.
Zuppa said he and his friends found the bullet next a bench near the basketball court.
For parents, including Zuppa's mother, the incident brings about increasing concerns.
"It could have been my son's life yesterday and that's what's playing in the back of my head," Peter's mom said. "Brendon Mackey was killed just a mile from here."
Right now, the General Assembly is considering passing Brendon's Law: a bill in memory of the 7-year old who was shot by a stray bullet that would penalize those who shoot random gunfire.
Dr. Rebecca Caffrey is the founder of Moms Demand Action in Virginia and is lobbying for the bill.
"Everyone suspects that the gunshots came from the same people/residence as previous incidents but no arrests were made last night," Caffrey said in a press release. "The desk sergeant at the local Chesterfield precinct didn't know anything about it when I called, which indicates to me they aren't taking this incident seriously."
The Virginia Defense League counters that, saying education over legislation would render more success.
Chesterfield Police are still investigating and have yet to confirm the reports of gunfire -- or if what Pete Zuppa actually found was a bullet.
