RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Potholes on any road can be a headache for drivers behind the wheel.

"I've just sort of gotten used to adjusting to the driving and knowing which roads to avoid," said Alex Regester, a Richmond Driver.

VDOT Spokeswoman Lindsay LeGrand told CBS 6 this time of year is when you start to see the potholes cropping up around the Richmond area.

She said VDOT has around 18,000 lane miles to maintain and the constant refreeze and thawing out of the pavement Central Virginia has seen doesn't help the road conditions.

"When it's cold outside we have to use what's called a cold asphalt mix, and its not as effective and any pothole patching we do in cold temperatures is not quite as effective as it is when we have warm temperatures," said LeGrand.

She said VDOT does their best to patch up the roads their responsible for, but said they want to remind drivers to utilize their customer service center for problem spots.

"The customer service center can reach the crews very easily and crews can go fix it almost immediately when they need to," said LeGrand.

You can contact the customer service center 24 hours a day at 1-800-FOR-ROAD.(1-800-367-7623)
