RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–The head of the city department in charge of snow removal and trash collection has been placed on leave.

Director of Public Works James A. Jackson has been suspended, according to a high ranking source at city hall.

Earlier Friday, Sharon North, spokeswoman for the department, would only tell CBS 6 that Jackson is out of the office until February 17th, and that Mr. M. Khara is currently serving as interim director. North said that Jackson would return Monday, February 17.

CBS 6 is working to confirm the cause of Jackson’s suspension and hope to have that new information tonight on CBS 6 news at eleven.

Jackson’s online bio states that he has 17 years of experience in the public works field. For 10 years he served as director for Grand Rapids and Detroit, Michigan.

Jackson was nominated as “Public Official of the Year” for Governing Magazine in 2010 and “Public Works Director of the Year” for American City & County Magazine in 2009.

He also served as a 1st Lieutenant with the United States Marine Corps.
