RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - With sub-freezing temperatures and forecasts calling for a couple of inches of snow to the south and east of Richmond, utility companies ramped up Tuesday for a second round of winter weather in as many weeks.

Dominion Virginia Power urged customers to conserve power where they can since heating systems will be running at full capacity. Dominion said they are capable of meeting all power demands, but customers can reduce the pressure of energy generation by conserving energy in the morning and at night.

In order to lower energy usage while staying comfortable, Dominion offered a few tips:

  • Set heating system thermostats to the lowest temperature that leaves you comfortable
  • Turn off any unneeded lights
  • Delay using dishwashers, washing machines, clothes dryers, and other large appliances until later in the day
  • Keep water heaters set at 120 degrees
  • Seal areas where you feel cold air coming into the house
  • Close the flue to any fireplace that is not in use

VDOT crews spent Tuesday pre-treating roads to the south and east of metro Richmond.  Trucks, salt, and sand were prepped in case the roads deteriorate.

"We're replacing our materials as best we can," VDOT spokeswoman Lindsey LeGrand, said. "Last week did take some of our resources, but we actually got some deliveries that we made this morning and we're continuing to expect them throughout this afternoon."

The response to last week's storm may actually help VDOT crews this time around.

Residual materials left on the roadways should help partially melt some of the expected accumulation.  Still, crews are on standby in case condition worsen late Tuesday.
