RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – This morning was our coldest so far this Winter. With snow on the ground, mostly clear skies and calm conditions overnight in a dry, arctic air-mass, temperatures plunged into the single digits and lower teens in central Virginia.

Richmond International Airport registered a low temperature of 7 degrees, which was just one degree shy of tying the record low for today’s date of 6 degrees from January 23, 1936.

Our previous coldest mornings of Winter this season happened in Richmond on January 22 and 7. Both mornings made it down to 10 degrees.

Friday morning’s low temperatures will be similar, which puts prolonged stress on at-risk pipes for freezing and bursting. Any melting we get today will re-freeze tonight as black ice. Expect slippery and sometimes hazardous road conditions to continue Friday morning.
