RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Randolph-Macon College professor and economist Dr. David Brat announced he will challenge Republican Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the upcoming Republican primary.

“I teach economics to college students every day. The major issue, in dollar terms, that affect the average person is the debt,” Bratt said at a campaign stop in Church Hill Thursday. “The power figures in D.C. are busy catering to their Rolodexes instead of solving that debt problem.”

7th districtCantor, considered one of the most powerful politicians in Washington D.C., has represented Virginia’s 7th District since 2001.

Parts of Chesterfield, Henrico and Richmond are included in the 7th District.

The counties of Goochland, Hanover, Louisa and New Kent are also included.

Brat will spend the next two days talking to 7th District voters.

“I’m running to unite [the Republican Party]. I’m trying to build a broad coalition of people who follow the Republican creed. The basis is fiscal responsibility,” Brat said.

He planned stops in New Kent County, St. John’s Church in Richmond and courthouses in Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield on Thursday.
