HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - The two people who escaped a burning Henrico home said they believed a malfunctioning furnace started the fire.

When Henrico Fire crews arrived at the home along the 1900 block of Oak Hill Dr., off Mechanicsville Turnpike, they reported heavy fire from the roof and back of the house.

"Crews were able to bring the fire under control quickly and prevent the spread to any adjacent structure," Henrico Fire Capt. Daniel Rosenbaum wrote.

The fire was marked under control at 4:08 a.m., about 40 minutes after fire crews arrived.

"The home did have a smoke detector, but it is unsure if it was working at the time of the fire,"Rosenbaum wrote. "The owners reported they were alerted by a loud noise at the rear of the structure and awoke to the fire. The smoke detector was not going off when they left the house."

The Henrico Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating to determine the official cause of the fire.

The Red Cross is assisting those who have been displaced.
