CHARLOTTESVILLE Va. (WTVR) - University of Virgina students and members of the Charlottesville Community came to UVa Thursday night to pray for Senator Creigh Deeds and his family.

The vigil was held by UVa University Democrats and College Republicans.

"I know it's going to be so difficult for his family to cope with their loss, but we just want to show our support for him," said Elizabeth Minneman, Chairman of College of Republicans at UVa.

According to Virginia State Police, Creigh Deeds was stabbed multiple times by his son, Gus Deeds on Tuesday morning outside their Bath County home.

Police said it appears Gus Deeds then shot and killed himself.

"People find this to be a traumatic event and he's not going through this alone, and we want him to know that he's not going through this alone," said Jarrod Nagurka, Outreach Director of the University of Democrats at UVA.

Along with sending their prayers, community members and students signed a poster for Deeds, wishing him a speedy recovery.

"He deserves our thoughts and our prayers in this tragedy," said Sam Tobin, a UVa student.
