CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — A former Virginia State University student will spend five years in prison for his role in a botched drug deal last year that turned deadly.

Twenty-one-year-old Khaliq Oliver pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal Tuesday to four charges in the April 2012 robbery and shooting death of Tyrail Hughes.

Police had charged Oliver with conspiracy to commit murder and conspiracy to violate the drug control act.

A judge sentenced Oliver to 24 years in prison, but suspended 19 years of the sentence.

Ryan Simms, the man who shot Hughes, is serving a 63-year prison sentence for the murder.
