CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - It was a surprise that stunned Clover Hill High School music teacher Janine Evans. Basim Mansour, the owner of Michael & Son, showed up at Clover Hill to present Evans a check for $3,500.

Mansour lost his mother to breast cancer in 2007. Last month he offered to help a breast cancer patient in need and asked Central Virginians to suggest a deserving recipient. A student named Katie Lucas nominated Evans.

"Mrs. Evans, my school chorus/piano lab teacher was diagnosed with breast cancer around last February, and she definitely deserves this," Lucas wrote in her email to Michael & Sons. "When she was diagnosed and her doctor told her she needed to stay home and rest, and needed surgery as soon as possible and needed treatment, she kept putting her choir kids ahead of her. My chorus group, a mini show choir, had our first and only competition coming up and she wanted so much for us to win that she kept pushing back her surgery and rescheduling doctors appointments so we could have after school practices. And its because of her that our choir won first place in our division at the competition."
