(WTVR) – Disney has officially chosen December 18, 2015, as the release date for “Star Wars: Episode VII”

That means fans of the popular sci-fi franchise will have to wait another two years and director J.J. Abrams gets more time to overcome script delays that led to the ouster of original screenwriter Michael Arndt.

Abrams and original “Empire Strikes Back” writer Lawrence Kasdan have taken over script duties in an effort to meet the deadline.

Original trilogy stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford are reportedly set to reprise their roles and original composer John Williams will be wielding his baton for the score.

Location scouting and pre-production has begun on “Star Wars: Episode VII,” with filming set to begin next spring at London’s Pinewood Studios.

2015 is shaping up to be a big one for the film industry, with titles such as Marvel’s “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,”  the “Man of Steel” sequel which will pit Henry Cavill’s Superman against Ben Affleck’s “Batman,” “Jurassic Park IV,” “Terminator 5,” Pixar’s “Finding Dory” and a sequel to 1996’s “Independence Day” all headed to the big screen.
