BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) — Allowing teachers to bring guns into the classroom has been a hot topic since the deadly shooting last year at an elementary school in Newton, Conn.
Now supervisors in Bedford County are asking Virginia lawmakers to approve a proposal that would give school districts the option of allowing teachers to carry guns.
The proposal is one of many expected to be introduced in the 2014 General Assembly session in January.
Supporters believe arming teachers will make students and staff safer without costing taxpayers money.
However, critics claim giving teachers guns would solve one potential problem, but create dozens of other issues, including student safety.
