HOPEWELL, Va. (WTVR) – Two Hopewell High School students won first place medals at a recent DECA competition at the State Fair of Virginia. DECA is an international organization that helps high school and college students learn real-world marketing skills.

Senior Christian Sherr and freshman Tiara Taylor won the 280-team competition that gave groups 10 minutes to “study and figure out how to present their findings or solve a case study in their role playing events.”

“Chris (Sherr) is in Marketing II, but never joined DECA last year,” Hopewell High School DECA advisor Phyllis Slachter said. “Most of the students who competed had never been in marketing before, or joined DECA this year, but will not have the class until next semester.”

This year’s nationals are in Atlanta, Georgia in early May.
