MANASSAS, Va. (WTVR) - The National Park Service wants to decrease the white tail deer population at civil war battlefields in Virginia and Maryland.

The service said it would have to to kill 2,800 deer at three locations to reduce damage to forests over a four-year period. In Manassas, 1,600 deer would be killed under the plan.

Meat from the deer kills would be donated to local food banks.

The park service would also implement a contraceptive to maintain the desired population.

Public comment on the plan is open through September 27.
