CBS 6 INVESTIGATES: Emails show ex-board member defended embattled superintendent

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - On Thursday night, Henrico County School Board Chair, Beverly Cocke announced the board would not be extending Superintendent Patrick Russo's contract.

Russo is currently on paid annual leave. This news comes after CBS 6 pressed school leaders for answers regarding questionable emails involving Russo.

"We anticipate our Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Pat Kinlaw being in charge when school opens on September 3," said Cocke.

Russo's contract ends in 2015, but a clause requires the board to consider an extension in 2013. Cocke would not say the reasons behind the decision, or if and when Russo would be returning to fulfill his position for the remainder of the contract.

"The investigation is still ongoing, there's still a lot of information that is still coming forward and it really truly needs to be fully looked at," said Cocke.

The school board is also without a Three Chopt District representative.

Diana Winston stepped down from the board after questions were raised about close relationships between her family and Mr. Russo.

Cocke said the board is now accepting applications for an interim board member to replace Winston.
