RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Democratic candidate for Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe responded to a Washington Post report on an investigation into a company he co-founded.

The paper reported GreenTech Automotive was under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commissionfor the way it dealt with foreign investors.

McAuliffe, who said he left the company late last year to focus on his campaign, also said he first learned about the investigation from the Post.

“The first I learned of this investigation was earlier this week when the Washington Post reached out to my campaign. I have no knowledge of the investigation other than what I have read in the papers. I find it unfortunate that a Republican Senator from Iowa – who has a long history of support for the EB-5 program – selectively released information for the purpose of partisan attacks instead of getting facts,” McAuliffe said in a statement.  “If there are concerns as to whether procedures were properly followed, those concerns should be examined and I’m glad the company said it is cooperating fully.”

Republican candidate and Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli challenged McAuliffe to be more forthcoming.

“In light of the latest revelations, I am once again calling on my opponent to step forward and answer questions regarding his efforts to secure visas for foreign investors,” Cuccinelli said in a statement released Friday.
