RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Virginia Commonwealth University is alerting the campus after several students received questionable emails.

A spokesperson for the university said three people filed complaints with the IT department – and that several others complained – after receiving job offer scam emails.

Officials said the emails aim to trick students into giving out personal information by sending a fraudulent check and then instructing the recipient to deposit the check.

The student is instructed to keep a portion of the money, but send the rest of the funds to another person via money order. However, the original check ends up bouncing and the student’s account gets stuck with the charges.

At least one person is believed to have lost money in the job offer scam.

Students are advised to report any suspicious emails to police or ignore them.
