Richmond, Va. (WTVR)–State employees will get a two percent raise, starting with the paychecks they receive on August 16.

State workers received bonuses in 2010 and 2012, but this is the first increase in their base pay in six years.

The state just finished the fiscal year, which ended June 30, with a $262 million dollar surplus.

It’s the fourth straight year the state has finished a budget cycle with a surplus.

Governor Bob McDonnell says this is proof Virginia’s economy is growing stronger.

In addition to the two percent raise, state employees with more than five years of service will also get additional money, based on their years of service.
