DES MOINES, Iowa – Likely, you’ve heard it, maybe even a thousand times. But do you really know the history behind the words within “The Star Spangled Banner?”
Prior to becoming the national anthem, the song was performed ahead of baseball games starting in the 1880’s. Francis Scott Key is credited with writing the song after watching the British raid Fort McHenry during the war of 1812.
