New Richmond interim superintendent comes out retirement for position

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)—A recently retired superintendent of Faquier County Public Schools, and former Armstrong High School principal, has been named the interim superintendent of Richmond public Schools.

The appointment of Dr. Jonathan Lewis followed a special meeting and vote by the Richmond School Board. Dr. Lewis, a 33-year veteran educator and administrator, will replace Dr. Yvonne Brandon, who previously announced her resignation as superintendent.

“We believe his past experience as a superintendent, his reputation for solid leadership in public education, as well as his familiarity with Richmond, will greatly serve our 24,000 students, staff and community partners as we continue to move this district forward while looking for a permanent superintendent,” said Jeffrey Bourne, Chairman, Richmond City School Board, in a press release.

Dr. Lewis’ served as Faquier County Public Schools superintendent from January 2008 to January 2013. Before that, Lewis served as superintendent of Poquoson’s public school system for nine years and as assistant superintendent for Hanover County Public Schools from 1996 to 1999.

Dr. Lewis began his career in public education as an English teacher at Thomas Jefferson High School from 1979 to 1983. From there, he worked as both an assistant principal and principal at Armstrong High School from 1983 to 1989.

A graduate of the University of Richmond, Dr. Lewis earned his master’s degree in English from Virginia Commonwealth University and his doctorate from the College of William and Mary.
