People in central Virginia are getting phone calls from an organization called the Police Protective Fund, asking for donations.

Some viewers asked us to do some digging, and we found some complaints about the charity that we think you should know about.

Ultimately it's up to you to decide who and how you want to donate your money.

The Police Protective Fund is a charity that says it assists law enforcement officers through educational programs. For example, their website lists a junior police academy that lets officers connect with kids to build trust, and teach them about law enforcement.

TV station WTVF  in Nashville reports that last year the Police Protective fund was fined $20,000 dollars by the state of Tennessee for breaking state code and making phone calls asking for donations.

The fund has actually been banned from making phone calls in Tennessee and Missouri.

CBS 6 reached out to the Police Protective Fund, but they haven't responded to the information we found.

We also asked local police departments what's the best way to support its officers. Gene Lepley with the Richmond Police Department said the best way to help is to donate to the Richmond Police Athletic League or Richmond Police Foundation.

Have you donated to this charity? What was your experience like?
