RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–Dozens of local residents and volunteers dug in and got their hands dirty as part of a landscape project with bonus environmental benefits.

The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay put forward $45,000 in grant money, with help from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, to re-landscape near the popular Reedy Creek.

Volunteers are planning native plants, bayscapes and rain gardens that will beautify the area, and serve to retain the water that normally heads straight for the James River and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay.

The Alliance joins forces with the Westover Baptist Church and theReedy Creek Coalition, along with landscape architect Drew Harrigan of Four Winds Design.

Neighbors interested in volunteering on June 21-22 planting days can contact the church at 233-9261.
