SURFSIDE BEACH, Texas (WTVR) — A 15-year-old boy swimming in the Gulf Monday afternoon was attacked by a shark near Surfside Beach, according to KHOU.

Surfside police said Garrett Sebesta, who was visiting the beach with a church group, was swimming in waist-deep water when he felt something bit his left calf.

Police said when the teen reached into the water to push the shark away, the shark then bit his left hand.

KHOU reported that a witness said the victim appeared to be conscious and talking when he was loaded onto a stretcher.

A helicopter transported  Sebesta to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center, where he will face several surgeries.

The teen’s mother told KHOU that her son is missing big chunk of his calf and that he has severe nerve damage in his hand.
