Maps showing how Americans speak English in different parts of the U.S.

(WTVR) – How do you pronounce “caramel?”  “Car-ml” or “carra-mel?”  Most of us know that Americans from different regions pronounce words in various ways, but now you can see the differences illustrated on a map.

Joshua Katz, a PhD student at North Carolina State University used data from an online survey conducted by Cambridge University to combine with maps showing people’s pronunciations.

Katz originally gathered the information for his end-of-the-year statistics project. North Carolina State University published the results on The Abstract’s website.
