RICHMOND, Va (WTVR)- People in Richmond got a few breaks from the rain throughout the day Friday.

But to the east in New Kent County, it was a much different story.  Rain there was steady all day, causing problems for drivers and homeowners.

With signs declaring road closures and with a number of temporary detours, things could get tricky if you were not from around here.

One driver from Jefferson, Maine could have told you that.

"I was trying to get close to see if they'd let me through,” said Joe Holland.  “I have four-wheel drive so maybe I could have talked them into it.  At any rate, I have my GPS and I’ll have to find my way around."

Joe Holland was on his way to a fishing tournament.  The big prize is a boat and ten thousand dollars but he said he got a lot of offers to make money already if things get worse.

"Quite a few people told me to not go far with the boat because they may need me to get them out of their house or to take them to get groceries," Holland said.

The bullfrogs may like the wet weather but Martha Pitts could make do with less of it.

"We've been here 11 years and the furthest it's come up before is to the cedar trees," Pitts said.

At 11 Friday morning, when Pitts left for Williamsburg, none of the flooding was here.  She returned hours later to find about six inches of standing water in her front yard which was creeping closer to her house.

"We just hope for the best."

Holland says one good thing about the rain, it makes the water murkier which he says levels the playing field he for Saturday's fishing tournament.
