Changes to oyster tax take effect

Posted

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - The Associated Press is reporting that on June 1 new rules over how watermen and oyster farmers pay taxes on their hauls to the state.

Farmers will no longer have to fill out paperwork and pay taxes by the bushel. Instead they'll pay a flat annual fee that should actually generate more money for the state.

The new revenue generated by the fee will go towards replenishing the oyster population in the Chesapeake Bay.

Many farmers aren't bothered by the idea of paying more money because the smaller amount of paperwork will also save time and money.
