Richmond apartment complex evacuated in SWAT standoff

RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)--The SWAT responded to a Richmond apartment complex after reports of a mental subject making threatening comments, said Richmond Police spokesperson James Mercante

Next, a standoff  with the SWAT team prompted an evacuation of the area. The apartment complex is located at Fairmount Avenue and 1300 N. 19th Street, in the Mosby area.

Police were contacted around 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening. A neighbor heard an individual they believe to be mentally-ill muttering threatening things to himself. SWAT team members used a number of different protocols to get the man to exit the apartment.

FInally, a chemical agent was dispensed and police entered the apartment building and found the 50-year-old man in the back, unharmed. Police said he has been taken to VCU Medical center for an evaluation.

Residents are being allowed to go back inside their apartments.
