RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - Broomball? What is broomball?

It’s played on ice at the L’il Rink in Lakeside with a spongy toy ball and “spatulas on a stick,” as one player said.

It’s a sport where teams have ironic names and beer is the “Gatorade of broomball,” as one player reported.

But it’s also a crazy good workout and tons of fun for the young men and women who participate in a sport that stretches muscles “you didn’t know you had,” as one young woman said.

It’s one of several sports, including dodge ball, kick ball, wiffleball, volleyball and football, offered to the 5,000 or so members of the River City Sports and Social Club, founded and owned by Sean Small.

It’s not just about healthy partying, socializing and recreation, he said. It can also be about meeting that special someone.

Plenty of spouses have been met playing fun, contact sports like Broomball, Small said.
