RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -- Wednesday night the Richmond City Council approved a nearly $130 million budget. This approval however doesn't mean the three schools on the possible school closure list are off the hook. Today students at Clark Springs Elementary, one of the three schools on the chopping block, had on display dozens of heart-shaped signs.
Terrell Jackson's 6-year-old son attends Clark Springs. Jackson said he is hopeful the board will find a way to save not only Clark Springs, but Albert V. Norrell Elementary School and the Adult Career Development Center (ACDC), which are all on the possible short list.
Jackson said his son, "fell in love with the school and a lot of the teachers and staff he knows."
But Richmond School Board Chairman Jeff Bourne said the approved budget from the council, "doesn't solve that problem because part of the strategy to close our own gap is to close those schools."
Bourne also said the approved council budget does not ask for class sizes to increase or require furloughs.
The budget will now make its way back to the School Board for final approval in order to meet the July 1 deadline.
Board members set a public hearing to give the community a chance to voice their concerns and opinions about the possible school closures.
The hearing is set for Tuesday, May 28 at 5:30 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson High School.
